The Leitrim County B team travelled to Newbridge to defend their Intercounty Cup title they won last year. The intermediate section is a tough category with international players across most of the county teams entering this tournament.

With 7 teams in the competition and Leitrim drawn to play Limerick in the quarters, the defence of their title would start against a determined Limerick team. The Leitrim lads took a little while to get going and the match was tight going into the last set but in a race to 14 the quality of the Leitrim players came out and raced to 14 before Limerick had any chance to respond.

Into the semis and Leitrim were to face the best that Fermamagh have to offer. Their A team is in the intermediate category and with Leitrim beating them last year, they were hoping to do it again. The format for the match is 3 sets of 9 with the middle set scotch doubles. In the first set Leitrim lost the first 3 frames but quickly put that right by winning the next 6 which put them into a good position going into the scotch doubles. The second format is a tough one with each doubles player playing alternate shot and Leitrim unfortunately lost that set 7-2 so trailed 10-8 going into the last. these frames were nervy and tight and Fermanagh got over the line to win 14-12.

Unlucky lads but great defence of your title. You’ll be back next year.
