Last weekend seen the 2nd ranking event of the Irish pool calendar take place in the South Court Hotel, Limerick. Leitrim were well represented with 11 competitors entering different competitions from Under 23 to Over 50’s.
Play began on Friday evening with Kevin McWeeney and John McKenna in action, Kevin went through his session to reach the Last 32 on Sunday. Saturday Morning Colin Crossan was up, he progressed along the Winners side but lost in the Winners Qualification and the Losers Qualification to Shaun Sharkey and Greg Casey respectively. Wayne Kilmartin progressed along the winners and qualified in the losers qualification.
Saturday afternoon had most of the Leitrim Competitors Gavin Donnelly and Lee McSharry progressed through the winners side Gavin beating Dave McWeeney in the qualification while Lee beat Matthew O’hara, Dave McWeeney also qualified in the Losers qualification beating Richie Lawlor in dramatic fashion. Keith Conlon played well beating Matthew Mahon and Kevin mcKinney but lost in a decider to Shane Sheridan.
On Saturday Evening, Jamie Gaffney was the only Leitrim player Jamie lost in a decider in his first match and had to endure 4 matches before falling short losing to Ronan Fay 4-1.
Onto the Sunday, the last 32 of the main event Leitrim had 5 competitors in the last 32, Kevin McWeeney, Gavin Donnelly, Wayne Kilmartin, Lee mcSharry and Dave McWeeney. In Dave’s match he went 5-2 up on a young Cork player Sean Walsh but unfortunately lost in a decider. Of course 2 of the Leitrim Lads had to meet, Wayne Kilmartin and Lee McSharry battled it out for a place in the Last 16 of the Event. Wayne took a 2-0 lead over the Drumkerran man but Lee retaliated winning 6 frames in a row beating Wayne 6-2. Gavin Donnelly faced Tyrone’s Ronan Fay, fay starting the better of the two going 3-0 up but Gavin got himself into the match winning the next 6 frames to beat fay 6-3. Finally, Kevin McWeeney seen himself caught in a tight battle with David Fuery, it was tit for tat the whole way to 5-5 where Kevin clinched the final frame to Progress to the Last 16.
In the last 16 Gavin Donnelly faced Cork’s Greg Casey, Gavin knew he had a tough game ahead and stepped up to the challenge by going 5-3 down, from 5-3 Gavin got back to 5-5 in a race to 7. Casey and Donnelly shared the next 2 frames bringing the game to a decider, in the decider Casey broke which would be his last shot as Donnelly cleared from break. Lee McSharry faced Cork’s Sean Walsh, McSharry was not holding back as he raced into a 3 frame lead and held this to the end beating the young Cork man 7-3. Kevin McWeeney faced Mayo’s Barry Hough, Hough started the better of the 2 going 4-2 up but McWeeney struck back going ahead at 7-5, Hough took the next 2 to bring it to Hill-Hill, McWeeney was to break in the decider and cleared from this break to progress to the Quarter Final with his 2 team mates.
In the Quarter Final Leitrim made up 3 of the 8 competitors, yet again of course 2 met other, Gavin Donnelly and Lee mcSharry were to battle it out in a race to 8 to progress to the Semi Final, Donnelly started the better having 2 clearances from break to go 2-0, and built on this to go 6-1 ahead. At this point it was crunch time for McSharry, he reeled off 5 frames to draw it level, 6-6. They both shared the next 2 to bring the match to a deserving deciding frame. Up to this stage in the match there was up to 8 Clearances from breaks.
McSharry was the victor in the end progressing to face Mayo’s Declan Hough in the Semi Final. Kevin McWeeney faced Limerick’s Jason Waters in another Quarter final, the match was tight at 3-3 but Waters really kicked it up a gear winning the next 5 frames to knock Kevin out of the competition.
In the Semi Final Lee McSharry faced Mayo’s Declan Hough, the match started off tight with a tie at 3-3. From here the Mayo man pushed ahead having a 2 frame lead with 1 needed, 7-5. Lee knew what was needed and let his game flow and had great finishes to get it to a decider 7-7. Unfortunately, Lee lost the decider but did himself proud reaching another Semi Final of an IPA event.
In the IPA Premier League Colin Crossan faced Offaly’s Pat OLeary, Crossan went 5-1 up in this match but OLeary clawed his way back into the match and eventually it went to a decider. Crossan cleared from break in the decider. Kevin McWeeney faced Cavan’s Stephen Dempsey, it was tight to 3-3 but Dempsey kicked on beating Kevin 8-3.
