Leitrim Duo crowned World Champions

Jamie Gaffney from Ballyfarnon and Lee McSharry from Drumkeeran were crowned Under 23 team world champions 2019 at the World Pool Championships help in Blackpool last month. Lee and Jamie were on a 4 man team along side Wexford’s Jordan Synnott and Adam Maher. Lee and Jamie started the week well for Team Ireland beating Wales 7-2 and Ireland B 6-3, they lost to the tournament favourites England A 6-3. Day 2 Ireland A had one game vs South Africa beating them 6-3. Monday seen the start of the singles event where Lee and Jamie started very well, Lee beating Malta’s Ryan Pisani 6-5 while Jamie Beat Luke Marrot 6-3 from Wales. Later Monday Jamie beat James Willis 6-3 from England, this unfortunately set up a last 16 match between Lee and Jamie for Tuesday Morning. On the day Jamie found form early was clinical throughout beating Lee 6-1. For the team Ireland did very well on Tuesday they first beat Scotland 8-1, Northern Ireland 8-1 but lost to England B 7-2. Team Ireland were in a great position with 4 wins from 6 matches. Wednesday Ireland beat Morrocco 5-4 but lost to Malta 5-4 in a very tense match. Ireland were in the mix for top 4 but had a must win game versus India on Thursday. Ireland beat India 5-2 putting them into a semi final match versus the Ireland B team for Thursday evening. In the semi Ireland A had a great start going 3-0 up, Ireland B clawed one back 3-1, Ireland A got the next leaving them on the hill 4-1 nut the B team didn’t lie down getting the next 4-2. Our own Jamie Gaffney was up next and took out a solid finish potting the black into a blind pocket to put the A team into the World Final. In the Quarter Final of the singles Jamie Gaffney played fellow Irish man Jordan Synnott, Synnott started the better of the 2 going 6-2 up but Jamie found a gear and brought it back to 6-5. Jamie had a chance to bring it to a decider but Jordan stole the frame winning 7-5. Friday morning Ireland faced the favourites England, Ireland had a great start going 3-1 up England showed their class bringing it to 3-2 and 4-3. Ireland reached the hill with a win from Synnott. The drama wasn’t finished there and brought it to a decider. Adam Maher stepped in against Sam Bircher, Maher playing solid pool and taking out the finish once he seen the opportunity to get Ireland their 3rd Under 23 World Title in a row.

We had 2 representatives on the Irish Mens team, Colin Crossan from Berkshire/ Carrick on Shannon/ Essex/ etc. and Gavin Donnelly from Keshcarrigan, the Irish mens team had a good start beating Morocco 11-10 with Colin wining the decider, followed by an 14-7 win over Mauritius but lost to Wales 13-8. Day 2 the mens team beat India in their only game 11-10 so they had 3 wins from 4. Tuesday they started the day beating France 11-10, but had 2 loses to Australia and England. Ireland had a better day Wednesday beating Scotland and South Africa, this left them with 6 wins from 9 matches. On Thursday Ireland had 1 match if they win they were placed 2nd on the table, they faced our Neighbours, Northern Ireland but unfortunately lost 11-10 lining them up with Australia in the Quarter Final. Ireland found a brilliant performance and were very clinical throughout beating the Aussies 11-9. Ireland now faced the heavy favourites England, The Irish men started well but England had a lot of clearances from break and won the match 11-6. The Irish Under 23 Team following their World Championship final win over England. The Irish Mens Pool Team who lost to the eventual Winners England in the World Pool Championships semi final.
