Event 3 of the Leitrim tour championship took place 04th Feb 18 in Drumshambo Pool Hall. The draw for this round produced some exciting match ups. Former European singles champ Jamie Gaffney dispatched the challenge of new comer Alan Cunningham. Hugh Kielty beat the in form Peter Devaney. Treasurer and all round club man Maurice Cullen defeated the affable Darren Phillips. Gavin beat Richard Shanley, one of the most naturally gifted cueists on our tour. Leigh Joyce put up a great battle against the experienced campaigner of Niall Sweeney but fell short. Wayne had a great win against close friend John Mc Kenna and JJ Mc Veigh eliminated Chairman John Casey.
Jamie 5 JJ 2
Hugh 5 Mick 1
Niall 5 Maurice 3
Gav 5 Wayne 2
Once again there were some fantastic pairings in this round. Jamie continued his fine form with a win over JJ. Hugh played close to his best at times to take out a tough opponent in the form of Mick Higgins. Niall won out against Maurice in a close encounter and Gavin sealed his place in the semi’s with a fine win over classy operator Wayne Kilmartin.
Niall 6 Jamie 4
Hugh 6 Gav 4
As the score lines suggests, both of these games were extremely close and could of went either way.
Niall overcame challenge of Jamie Gaffney. In a match that could have been a classic, Gavin and Hugh scrapped it out in a messy dog fight. Gav had led for most of the match, but at 4-4, Hugh found an extra gear to close out the game.
The final will be played at the next tour event where Niall and Hugh will renew old rivalries in which promises to be an entertaining final. Many thanks to all who attended to make for such a great tournament. Special mention to Maurice Cullen who streamed some of the games and contributes tireless work to keeping our association in great working order. Hope to see you all at our next event!
